This striking painting of the Last Supper by French painter Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret (January 7, 1852 – July 3, 1929) catches what almost no other does of this subject, the inability of the disciples to understand what Jesus is talking about as he reinvents the Passover meal and points us to the Great Feast. April 7th Lord's Supper.
This week after what is understood by all as a difficult and contentious passage, we walk into Mark 14:1-11 and see how much Mark wants us to see the emphasis of Jesus on how we stay close to Jesus. In one of his usual sandwiches, he starts with the priests seeking a way to kill Jesus as the first slice of bread and ends with Judas providing the way. But the meat and all in the middle is the disciple (named by John as Mary of Bethany) who shows us how to be disciples, how to stay (unlike Judas) close to Jesus: 1. Do all unto Him and 2. Do what you can (what He has enabled YOU to do, each next right thing). March 31@11:00.
The real point of the end of Mark 13 is not to set out some kind of a timeline about the end, but to see the sign that Jesus is enthroned as the world's king. How hard must that have been for these four listeners who would, in a week, see His physical body destroyed? And how astonishing the evidence that Jesus is installed as king in heaven when, in 30 years from this day in the temple courts, this massive temple is destroyed and non Jews are gathered to Jesus by the teaching of the apostles? Solid evidence to be at work with all we are for Him. AND of the certainty of what Jesus says.
Sermon: Who Do You Think You Are? Mark 12:35-44 (audio only)
Jesus brings to a dramatic close the disputations in the temple with a remarkable picture of true faith that puts everything in. And what the experts in the law do with the benefits of adoration and power they seek from the temple system. You’ve seen the hypocrites in churches; so does Jesus. What is faith that Jesus honors look like? Mark 12:35-44. Pastor Weibley preaching, March 10. Next in chapter 13, the destruction of that temple with Gary Moore preaching on March 17.
Sunday February 24th. THE ART OF KILLING GOD. (Mark 11:27-12:12) After the remarkable and prophetic withering, Jesus zeroes in on three things as He is face to face with the ones who will kill Him: 1. Rejecting Jesus' authority over your life 2. Rejecting God's Rights over your life and 3. The Right and Certain Exaltation of Jesus. (from outline headings by Nigel Bevnon)
February 10 . . . the culmination of all this teaching "on the way." Eyes are opened and Jesus as seen as Who He really is . . . and is followed by the last person anyone would expect.
One of the encores for Friday night's performance. An amazing Tamara Grace Jones!
The Carlisle Chamber Orchestra Pops Concert Friday night at 8:00. Free (well, give a donation if you want). The deeply moving Lincoln Portrait by Copland with Pastor Weibley narrating. Two Brahms Hungarian Rhapsodies, accordion on a piece by Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine tango composer, ending the night with selections from Phantom of the Opera and encores that you do not want to miss. REALLY. Not affiliated with the church, BUT WE LOVE THEM.
February 2 @11. Mark 10:32-45. What an unbelievable chapter! Jesus is continuing to show his closest followers what it means for them to deny themselves, take up their cross daily and follow. This is fresh every time you read it . . . As Jesus is on the way to the ultimate act of service, James and John jockey for first place. You’ve gotta appreciate that they finally “get” that there is going to be a crucifixion and after that “glory” but they still don’t comprehend what that means. Well, we don’t either. And that's where hope begins.
Winter weather is coming! Historically, the Sunday morning worship service is rarely, if ever, cancelled. If you feel it is not safe for you to go out, please stay home. Those who live close or are especially brave are welcome to come participate in a service. Sunday School will be cancelled if the parking lot cannot be cleared in time. Sunday School cancellations will be posted on the Church web site www.knowlovelive.org AND HERE by 8:00, depending upon the state of the parking lot.
